Rape- I Have a Dream...

Martin Luther King had a dream that we would all be created equal, and was a strong believer of nonviolence. However, a 19 year old women was raped on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard- right near the UNC campus. His dream was her nightmare. How ironic. This young lady was walking after 11 p.m. Strike one. She was alone. Strike two. Can't think of a strike three but she definitely should've been more precautious of her surroundings. But for someone to do such a violent crime appauls me. I know it happens everywhere but no one deserves to be treated or handled in such a matter. Rape IS a violent crime that is sometimes overlooked. Chapel Hill police are still working on the missing pieces. Let's just hope the puzzle gets put together soon and Martin Luther King's dream still continues to thrive.

Stamped Religion

It's obvious that everyone has their own preference of religion, some different- some the same. However, religion is one of those touchy subjects that get some people antsy. The Daily Tarheel recently had an article about how a UNC student's religious beliefs are represented through tattoos all over his body. The article titled "Identity in Ink" focuses primarily on the story his tattoos tell. Being a transgender as well as a Christian, it was hard for Angel Collie to find a church that truly accepted him. He used his tattoos as a symbol of identity and hope. Everyone may have their own opinion on this story, but it all comes down to personal beliefs. One culture may accept him, while others may not; it just depends on their own individual religious beliefs.

They are unique. They are opinionated. They are UNC students.

This video is a little conversation about what two UNC students feel about certain rights in terms of religion (Sorry about the coughing- I just recovered from Swine flu)

Are the Greeks weak?

The Greek system on the UNC campus is looking to improve its latest downfalls with their newest members. However, the rocky relationship has always been there, it's just now beginning to be revealed more publicly. The UNC administration has finally decided to take action as a result of the Aug. 23rd death of Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity president after a party at one of the fraternity houses. Alcohol abuse and drinking became a topic of discussion, and the University has launched an investigation in order to crack down on the Greek system. Underage drinking is getting out of control. Students are going to do it regardless, but there should be some stopping point, or at least a decrease in the amount of cases associated with underage drinking and alcoholic deaths. Sure, this is a worldwide issue. But UNC is the topic right now. If you can't do the time, don't do the crime. Enough said.

Cocaine at Carolina

I recently read an article in The Daily Tarheel about five UNC (current and former) students who were arrested for possession of cocaine. It was said that they had "197.6 grams of cocaine" on them combined. When I read this article, the first question that popped into my head was do they really value their education? UNC is one of the top public schools in the nation and it's almost as if they are throwing away a perfectly good education and future. As a current Freshman at UNC, I value my education just like most of the students here, but there are a select few everywhere that waste their potential making poor decisions such as the one those five students made. That decision will probably affect them the rest of their lives. What a shame.
